Not Another New Year’s Financial Resolution Article!

4 January 2022

I know what you are thinking if you have got this far in reading my article.  This is the time of year when heaps of financial experts tell you what you should have done, how bad you are for not doing it, and what you have got to do in 2022 to get back on track.

Well I think if you survived 2021 in good health, continued to enjoy a steady income, maintained your relationships, and managed to stay sane during all the COVID-19 lockdowns, that’s a big tick in my book.

So instead of finger pointing and nagging you to do something that you haven’t done, my suggestion is just enjoy the Christmas and holiday break.  We need this time to relax, spend time with loved ones and take the opportunity to recharge our batteries.

One of my favourite pastimes is listening to music. I have a love-hate relationship with Spotify but it is very useful to make playlists. One playlist that I create for each new year features songs that capture what I was into during the past 12 months. Generally it features my favourite new tracks and artists, along with some old classics that have been with me all my life.

So, I thought I would share this year’s playlist with you. It includes some bangers for the summer, which might just introduce to you something that isn’t throwaway pop. I hope they will also make you smile a little and, perhaps, get you thinking about your own financial wellbeing at the same time.

Sorry I couldn’t help myself, I had to write something around the topic, so you might as well
play the list and see if it inspires you to do anything differently in 2022. Who knows, it could make a huge difference before you head off to that Spirit in the Sky.

So here goes:

Side One (for your financial wellbeing)

  • Don’t Stop Thinking about TomorrowFleetwood Mac – Start Investing! Savings in bank accounts won’t get you to where you want to be in retirement
  • Highway to HellACDC – Get rid of that toxic debt like payday lenders, third tier finance companies, credit cards, and buy now pay later schemes
  • Don’t Leave Me This WayCommunards - Get a Will today if you don’t have one. Makes such a difference for your loved ones
  • Accidents Will Happen Elvis Costello – Make sure you have enough insurance to cover you and your most valuable assets
  • Don’t Stop till You Get Enough Michael Jackson - Saving via KiwiSaver is a great way to build your retirement savings nest egg. And, if you are one of the 1.2million not saving…….
  • Start me Up (again) Rolling Stones - KiwiSaver it’s the easiest way to save and get free money

Side 2 (food for the soul)

  • One Day Like This Elbow – My go-to feel good song of all time
  • Wish You Were Here Pink Floyd - A nod to those loved ones we lost this year
  • Heroes - David Bowie – A pat on the back for all Kiwis this year
  • The FeelersThe Hold Steady – My favourite song of the year
